The Hawks Athletic Club had sixteen teams, from Novice through Bantam, competing this year in the Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week tournament, one of the largest and longest running hockey tournaments in the world. Ten of our teams reached the semifinals, and of those four played the finals!
NW278's opening game of MHW was a close 3-4 loss to Sherwood Park. They quickly regrouped for their next game against Enoch the following day, winning 3-1 and advancing to the semifinals, where they faced down North SEERA in a 3-1 victory. The gold medal game was played on Jan. 21 at Terwillegar B versus Beaumont, with our Hawks taking the game 4-0 and winning GOLD!
NW275 won four games straight enroute to claiming the gold! Their first match-up was a 3-0 win over KC St. Matthews. Next, they faced stiff competition versus Enoch, but were able to pull out a 4-2 victory. The semifinals went the next day versus the Confed Cyclones, a team that had previously beaten them twice before. The team came out hard, scoring first and scoring often, and didn't let up until the game was done, with a 6-1 final score. The gold medal game, on Jan. 21 at Terwillegar C versus Millwoods, was a tough game, but our Hawks persevered, taking the game 4-2 and winning GOLD!
NW279 path to gold was also four straight wins. They took game one versus Whitemud 6-3. Game two went into overtime before our Hawks scored, taking the game 4-3 against North SEERA. The semifinal match-up versus SWAT saw SIXTEEN goals scored, with a final score of 11-5! The gold medal game on Jan. 22 at Terwillegar B was a re-match of their first game and saw our team winning the game 4-1 over Whitemud and taking GOLD! When congratulated on the win, head coach Darren Hutton said "today was all the kids. I was just lucky to be part of it."
NW282's first game was a 5-2 win over Whitemud. Game two was a close 3-2 victory over the SWZ. The semifinal match-up against SEERA saw the game go down to 1 on 1 in overtime before the Hawks buried the puck and won 4-3. The gold medal game was played on Jan. 22 at Terwillegar D versus Spruce Grove, with our Hawks losing a heartbreak game 2-3, and taking the SILVER.
We are very proud of all of our players and coaches! Great job and best of luck for the rest of the season. Go Hawks!
